Professor Richard Hu has researched the global city rankings with a focus on how Singapore, Shanghai and Sydney sit in these rankings. One key ranking is the Global and World City (GaWC) ranking which shows the impressive movement up the rankings of Shanghai and of Sydney. Cities based on Population Size The population numbers relate to the City Proper as defined by administrative boundaries. Quality of Living Rankings The Mercer (2016) index measures political, social, economic, cultural, natural environments plus health, education, transportation, recreation, consumer goods and housing factors. Global Financial Centres (Z/Yen Group, 2016) measures the business environment, financial sector development, infrastructure factors, human capital and reputation. Global City Rankings– Global and World Cities – UK (GaWC) measure the number of top global businesses in Financial Services, Legal Firms, Accounting Firms, Management Consultants and Advertising and Media Organisations.
