The planners I spoke to in Shanghai claimed that 1,000 kilometres of metro rail had been constructed in the last 25 years. Every new development precinct seems to be underpinned by new metro lines. The New Bund development has three different metro lines criss- crossing the site. In Singapore new metro lines seem to be under construction everywhere. Sydney developer Lendlease is building a new precinct of 7 mixed use towers on a site at Paya Lebar where two metro lines intersect. Clearly a rapid public transit system is the essential framework for increased density. Singapore has taken this further by introducing congestion charges to dissuade cars from entering the city areas. Shanghai has built 1,000 kilometres of Metro in the last 25 years. Asian cities also love promenades where pedestrian precincts encourage the community to walk some distance. In Shanghai the Bund alongside the river and similar promenades on the Pudong side of the river. Tianjin Road in Shanghai is a grand pedestrian street that connects the river to the main park as a bustling linear space. Singapore also has a series of linear spaces around Marina Bay and alongside the river.
