Shanghai has its traditional Chinese temples along with the Art Decco buildings of the Bund and now a new layer of architecture is arriving. The Jin Mao tower in Pudong is one of the first very tall towers reaching 88 floors into the sky. It is designed by Skidmore Owings and Merrill Architects in a manner that references traditional Chinese pagodas. The more recent 120 storey Shanghai Tower designed by Gentler Architects is a double skin building with atrium every 12 storeys between the two skins. Shanghai also has the amazing SOHO commercial complex designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. This dramatic flowing and curving series of buildings for the SOHO China group is one of a series of projects Zaha has designed for SOHO in China. Singapore has its share of architectural signature buildings with WOHA’s Oasia Downtown Hotel and their Parkroyal on Pickering hotel as standouts. The Marina Bay Sands by architect Moshe Safdie and the beautiful glasshouses in the adjacent Gardens on the Bay by Wilkinson Eyre are very strong architectural statements. Sydney is up there with the Sydney Opera House by Joern Utzon and the UTS Business School by Frank Gehry.
