The 2013 Urban Taskforce Development Excellence Awards were presented by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO the Governor of NSW. In her address the Governor referred to her predecessor Governor Lachlan Macquarie and his nation building drive to make Sydney a real city as the first urban centre in Australia. In some ways Governor Macquarie was the nation’s first developer.
The Chair of the 2013 awards jury was NSW Government Architect Peter Poulet and he outlined the reasons behind the jury’s decisions. The rest of the jury was Carolyn Cummins, Commercial Property Editor, Sydney Morning Herald; John Wynne, Managing Director Urbis; David Tanevski, Managing Director KWC Capital Partners and John Ferrarin, Director WT Partnership.
The Urban Taskforce would particularly thank UrbanGrowth NSW for their sponsorship of the awards.

BROOKFIELD PLACE PERTH
Brookfield Place is one of Australia’s most significant commercial developments. Located in the heart of Perth’s CBD, the development’s centrepiece is an office tower incorporating the latest in workplace design. The precinct provides a unique retail and dining are in some of the city’s most important sympathetically restored historical buildings. |

Winner: Residential Development 2013
SOLEIL, BRISBANE
Soleil is Meriton’s first Brisbane development and the tallest in the city. This iconic residential tower soars 74 levels and 250 metres high. ‘Simply stunning’ is the only way to describe the architectural masterpiece, a mixed-use development comprised of residential apartments, serviced apartments and first class resort amenities. |

ECLIPSE TOWER, PARRAMATTA
Developed in partnership by Leighton Properties and Grosvenor Australia, Eclipse Tower is an A-grade, 19-level, 5 Star Green Star rated – Office Design V2, commercial office tower located in Parramatta, NSW. Completed in July 2012 and sold fully leased, for a record dollar-per-square-metre value in Parramatta to REST Super (totalling $167,500,000), the development sets a precedent for commercial office buildings in Western Sydney. |

MASTERS HOME IMPROVEMENT, CHULLORA Goodman
The Masters Home Improvement development established the urban activation of an exciting 10 hectare antiquated industrial estate as a new bulky goods retail precinct in Chullora. Masters Home Improvements is Stage 1 of the site repositioning as a bulky goods precinct. The development adaptively reused an existing industrial facility and the design benefited from inherent, generous industrial volumes, roof skylights for natural light, structural steelwork, high load capacity concrete floors and large hardstand areas that could be used for car parking. Reusing the existing building significantly contributed to reducing energy in producing the facility and was key sustainable initiatives on the site.

KNORR BREMSE HEADQUATERS
A 12,500sqm purpose built office and warehouse complex, architecturally designed and engineered to meet the specific needs of international manufacturer Knorr Bremse. Knorr Bremse is the world’s leading manufacturer of braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles. The complex uses state of the art green design methods and only the highest quality material and finishes.

ADVANTAGE CARE AT BARDEN LODGE, SUTHERLAND
Barden Lodge is a boutique, luxurious yet affordable, 62-bed residential aged care facility in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire. It is now fully occupied since opening in July 2012. The extra-services facility includes beauty salon, theatre, designer indoor/outdoor living spaces, large private rooms with ensuite bathrooms and individual air-conditioning. |

Winner: Mixed- Use Development 2013
WOOLWORTHS HIGHETT
Woolworths purchased a vacant site in late 2008 and after a lengthy planning process works commenced in September 2011. The project was completed and opened on 1st May 2013. The development includes Woolworths supermarket 4055sqm full line; 14 speciality shops; 256 retail customer car parking spaces; and 130 apartments delivered by Accord Property Group. |

Winner: Adaptive Re use 2013
POWERHOUSE APARTMENTS, ROSEBERY
Revitalising the historical site of the old British General Electric Company in Rosebery, 135 apartments have been constructed across five buildings where a number of which sit within the original steel framework of the site. This exploits the industrial steel ambience and elements of the industrial infrastructure such as the gantry crane which spans over the public areas. The ornate and heritage listed 1930’s Art Deco brick warehouse facade has been retained in the scheme, giving the development a classic street appeal.

THE MASTERS RESIDENCES, BAYVIEW
A residential complex of 39 three bedroom plus study apartments, located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, adjacent to and overlooking Bayview Golf Course. Featuring wide frontages, soaring ceilings and terraces with daybeds and barbeques, finishes include stone, timber flooring, wool carpets and Miele appliances, plus a 20 metre heated swimming pool, cabana and gymnasium.

1 BLIGH STREET, SYDNEY
1 Bligh is Sydney’s first 6 Star Green Star rated office internationally recognised for its pioneering contemporary architectural design, cutting edge sustainability and innovative use of technology. Spanning approximately 42,700sqm across 27 levels, the building is located on the side bound by Bligh, Bent and O’Connell streets in the heart of Sydney’s financial district.

FORTE, VICTORIA HARBOUR
Forté is the world’s tallest timber apartment building. Using cross laminated timber, Forté has revolutionized construction methodology globally. A boutique development of 23 apartments, with 3 apartments per floor offering privacy and intimacy, every apartment is dual aspect and has been designed to maximise sunlight and natural ventilation.
